Reflections from Past Participants

What is an Insight Meditation Retreat?

An Insight Meditation retreat is a silent, immersive experience designed to cultivate mindfulness, deep self-awareness, and compassion. It blends Vipassanā meditation, loving-kindness (mettā), and Buddhist wisdom, often integrating psychological insights. With guided teachings, alternating sitting and walking meditation, and Noble Silence, participants develop inner clarity, emotional resilience, and a deeper connection to the present moment.

Insight Meditation is at the heart of the teachings and practice at Spirit Rock. Its purpose is to strengthen mindfulness (sati), our capacity to experience “things as they are” directly, without the filter of discursive thinking, evaluation or habitual reactivity. It consists of bringing a natural and clear attention to whatever occurs in the present moment. As we learn to be alertly and calmly present with our meditation, a deeper intimacy with ourselves and with the world will arise. As we cultivate our ability to remain mindful without interfering, judging, avoiding or clinging to our direct experience, wellsprings of insight and wisdom have a chance to surface.

Insight Meditation Retreat @ Home Overview

The @Home Retreat option allows you to fully engage with the Insight Meditation Retreat at Spirit Rock from anywhere, integrating the teachings into your daily life at a pace that works for you. Each day, you’ll receive 2.5-3 hours of Dharma talks and guided meditations—totaling 20+ hours of content per week—delivered via livestream and recorded for on-demand access.

This flexibility means you can join live sessions when possible and rewatch teachings and practice instructions as often as needed, allowing the wisdom to deepen over time. Whether you dedicate structured time each day or spread the content out over the month, this retreat provides a transformative opportunity to cultivate mindfulness, insight, and inner stillness—on your schedule.

Three Ways to Experience the Insight Meditation Retreat @Home

Our @Home Retreat option allows you to fully immerse in the Insight Meditation Retreat at Spirit Rock—from wherever you are and at a pace that works for you. Whether you want to mirror the full retreat experience, spread the teachings out over a month, or move at your own rhythm, you have the flexibility to engage in the way that best supports your practice.

The @Home option provides online access to live-streamed meditation instructions and Dharma talks from Spirit Rock’s Upper Meditation Hall. Recordings of each session will be available within 24 hours and can be replayed an unlimited number of times.

While this format does not include direct interaction with teachers, practice meetings, Q&A participation, or access to online small groups or affinity groups, it offers flexibility to practice on your schedule with lifetime access to the teachings. Meditate in your own space, free from group dynamics, and integrate insights into daily life.

9-Day Immersive Retreat (April 21-30) – Mirror the On-Land Experience

For those who want to fully commit to retreat-style practice from home, this option follows the same schedule as the in-person retreat. You’ll join live-streamed morning and evening sittings, Dharma talks, and guided meditations while structuring your day around alternating sitting and walking meditation, mindful meals, and silent practice.

Ideal for: Those who can clear their schedule and create a deep, immersive retreat environment at home.

Suggested Schedule

30-Day Flexible Retreat – Deepen at Your Own Pace

If a 9-day intensive isn’t possible, you can spread the teachings out over 30 days, engaging with the 20+ hours of guided meditations, Dharma talks, and Q+R sessions at a rhythm that works for you. Whether you practice for 30-90 minutes per day or dedicate longer weekend sessions, this format allows you to integrate mindfulness into daily life while staying connected to the retreat teachings.

Ideal for: Those who want structured engagement but need flexibility for work, family, and life commitments.

Suggested Schedule

Self-Paced Retreat – Practice on Your Own Time

With on-demand access to all recorded sessions, you can move through the teachings whenever it feels right. No schedule, no pressure—just a resource you can return to whenever you need inspiration. Whether you complete the retreat in a few weeks, a few months, or revisit key sessions over time, you’ll have the tools to cultivate insight and presence in a way that fits your journey.

Ideal for: Those who want complete flexibility and prefer an open-ended, self-guided experience.

Retreat Focus: Continuity of Awareness

This retreat offers a rare opportunity to settle the mind, open the heart, and cultivate a deep, continuous awareness that carries through all aspects of our experience. By gently sustaining mindfulness in both stillness and movement, we strengthen our capacity for inner balance, clarity, and equanimity. Through this steady presence, we begin to see more clearly the habits of mind that shape our perceptions and responses, allowing wisdom and compassion to emerge naturally.

With an emphasis on the continuity of awareness, we will explore how mindfulness can become an unbroken thread woven through our daily experience. This sustained attention helps stabilize the mind, allowing for greater insight and a deep sense of presence. Rather than striving or forcing concentration, we will cultivate a relaxed receptivity—learning to meet each moment with openness, kindness, and curiosity. This foundation of acceptance becomes a gateway to deeper investigation, revealing the attitudes and mental habits that condition our understanding.

Teachings will be offered on the nature of awareness, the role of mindfulness in liberating the heart, and the qualities that support a wise and compassionate relationship with experience. Our time together will include periods of guided and silent meditation, Dharma talks, mindful movement, and opportunities for inquiry and reflection. In the stillness of retreat, supported by a dedicated community of practitioners, we create the conditions for genuine transformation.

This retreat is open to all, whether you are new to meditation or have been practicing for many years. We welcome people from all backgrounds and life experiences and seek to foster an environment of inclusivity and belonging. Together, we will cultivate the qualities of presence, steadiness, and care—deepening our connection to ourselves, to each other, and to the unfolding mystery of life.

About the Teachers

Kamala Masters

Kamala Masters is co-founder with Steve Armstrong of the Vipassanā Metta Foundation on Maui, and a Guiding Teacher of the Insight Meditation Society of Barre, MA. In 1977 she began her Dharma training in the Mahasi tradition with the late Anagarika Munindra of India. In 1985, the late Ven. U Pandita also became her life-long teacher, training intensively in vipassanā and metta jhana meditations in Myanmar and abroad.

Joseph Goldstein

Joseph Goldstein is a co-founder and guiding teacher of Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts. He has been teaching Vipassanā and Metta retreats worldwide since 1974 and in 1989 helped establish the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies.

Vance Pryor

Vance Pryor has practiced insight meditation since 1999 in both the United States and Myanmar. He has been influenced by the teachings of Sayadaw U Pandita and Sayadaw U Tejaniya. He is a graduate of The Insight Meditation Society’s 2017-2021 Teacher Training Program.

Tara Mulay

Tara Mulay teaches and mentors Dharma practitioners on retreat and in daily life practice. Trained and authorized by the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, Tara serves as a Guiding Teacher and board member at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, and teaches nationally.

Winnie Nazarko

Winnie Nazarko first contacted the Dharma at a 1981 weekend retreat taught by Stephen and Ondrea Levine. While the retreat wasn’t what she expected, she recognized something deeply truthful in what she heard. Since that time, she has studied with many outstanding western teachers, including Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Steven Armstrong, and Kamala Masters. She has additionally benefited from the wisdom of monastic teachers, most recently the great Burmese concentration master Pa Auk Sayadaw, who taught her jhanas.

Course FAQ

The teachers have decades of experience anticipating common questions and challenges. Many participants find that almost all their questions are addressed naturally in the progressive instructions. The lifetime access allows you to absorb teachings more completely than the sometimes overwhelming pace of in-person retreats.

Many practitioners invite friends to join them for portions of the retreat, creating local micro-communities. Others appreciate the opportunity to focus entirely on their own experience without navigating group dynamics. Some form informal online discussion groups with other participants afterward.

Different, not lesser. Consider that the Buddha’s original teachings were designed for solitary practice in forests. This format returns to those roots while providing expert guidance. Many experienced practitioners actually prefer the home format for its integration with daily life and personalized pace.

Yes! Unlike an in-person retreat requiring complete separation from daily life, this format allows you to design a schedule that works for your situation. Many participants find ways to create “mini-retreat” periods within their regular lives.
