Foundational Practices for Inner Peace: The Four Foundations of Mindfulness

with John Martin and Tuere Sala

Mindfulness began with one simple teaching: Satipaṭṭhāna, the Buddha’s path to peace through presence.

Over five months, join John Martin and Tuere Sala to explore the Four Foundations of Mindfulness—body, feeling, mind, and patterns and rediscover the freedom of simply being here.

“Every time you come into the present moment, you are relearning Satipaṭṭhāna.”

Begins January 11th 2026

Why Take This Course?

Because mindfulness was never meant to stop at calm.

Many of us turn to mindfulness to ease anxiety, quiet the mind, or find a little peace in our busy lives. And it works, but that’s only the beginning.

Beneath every modern practice lies an ancient source: Satipaṭṭhāna, the Buddha’s complete map of mindfulness. It shows how awareness itself leads to freedom, not through one technique, but through understanding the full landscape of our experience: body, feelings, mind, and the deep patterns that shape our lives.

Learning Satipaṭṭhāna is like finding the roots of a great tree, it grounds your practice, nourishes insight, and connects you to something vast and enduring.

In this course, you’ll discover not just what mindfulness is, but how it works and why it has the power to heal, balance, and awaken the heart.

This is mindfulness at its source: a training not only in attention, but in liberation.

If you’ve ever wondered how to bring your practice fully into your everyday life, this is where that understanding begins.

Course Introduction

This five month journey invites you to return to the roots of mindfulness, not as a concept, but as a lived experience.

Guided by John Martin and Tuere Sala, you’ll explore the Four Foundations of Mindfulness: body, feelings, mind, and the patterns that shape our lives through thirteen progressive practices that bring clarity, compassion, and freedom into everyday life.

Each month centers on a key dimension of mindfulness practice, deepening both understanding and embodiment.

Through teachings, guided meditations, and community reflection, you’ll cultivate a steady relationship with mindfulness as a way of being one that supports both calm and awakening.

Across the five months, you’ll explore practices such as:

  1. Body: Mindfulness of breath, posture, movement, and impermanence
  2. Feelings: Recognizing pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral experiences with balance
  3. Mind: Observing mental states, restless, contracted, or clear—with insight
  4. Patterns (Dhammas): Understanding the forces that shape perception and freedom

Through these foundations, mindfulness becomes more than meditation; it becomes a way of living: awake, compassionate, and free.

Course Journey

We begin with the heart of practice, breath and posture. You’ll learn to steady awareness through breathing, walking, standing, sitting, and movement, discovering mindfulness as something you can carry into every moment of daily life.

Weekly meditations will introduce Mindfulness of the Hindrances, helping you recognize the subtle patterns of desire, aversion, restlessness, sloth, and doubt that obscure clear seeing.

This month brings a contemplative exploration of the nature of the body itself. You’ll learn to perceive the body as elements: earth, water, fire, and air and contemplate its anatomical parts to soften attachment and self-image.

Through Mindfulness of Death, we open to impermanence not as morbid reflection, but as a profound doorway to freedom and appreciation for life.

Here we turn toward the feeling tones that accompany every moment—pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. You’ll learn how these tones influence craving, aversion, and the choices you make each day.

We’ll also explore the Six Sense Spheresseeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and thinking—as the meeting points where awareness comes alive in experience.

This month centers on understanding the mind itselfnoticing when it is restless or calm, contracted or expansive, clouded or clear.

We’ll continue deepening Mindfulness of the Hindrances, learning skillful ways to meet them with curiosity and compassion.

Teachings on the Seven Factors of Awakeningmindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity—show how awareness naturally matures into wisdom and freedom.

In our final month, practice comes full circle as we explore the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Five Aggregatesteachings that illuminate how suffering arises and how it can cease.

You’ll learn how these core insights bring together everything you’ve practiced, revealing mindfulness as both the foundation and the flowering of the spiritual path.
